The global economy is undergoing a period of intense turbulence as geopolitical fractures and trade tensions continue to escalate among major powers. The ongoing tech and trade rivalry between the United States and China is driving a global supply chain restructuring toward “de-globalization,” forcing businesses to adapt their operational models. The U.S., EU, and other developed economies are reinforcing technical barriers, tariffs, and origin transparency requirements, making international trade increasingly complex. For Vietnam - a highly open economy heavily reliant on exports—this presents significant risks of supply chain disruptions and places intense pressure on enterprises to enhance governance, control, and compliance in cross-border commerce.

Meanwhile, the world economy remains burdened by prolonged inflation and persistently high interest rates. As of Q1/2025, the U.S. federal interest rate remains above 5% in efforts to curb sticky inflation, while energy prices, raw material costs, and logistics expenses show no signs of easing. The World Bank forecasts global growth to reach only 2.7% in 2025, down from 3% the previous year. For Vietnamese enterprises, this translates to rising input costs, weakening international demand, and restricted access to capital. Many manufacturers are faced with a pressing question: how to optimize operations, reduce waste, and improve financial efficiency when market conditions remain so uncertain?

Even more critically, risks from tariff policies - especially from the U.S. - pose clear threats. The Washington administration has announced new retaliatory tariffs of up to 45% on products suspected of origin fraud or failure to meet domestic standards. While Vietnam is not directly targeted, its role as a contract manufacturer within value chains linked to China makes Vietnamese businesses vulnerable to broad punitive measures. Weaknesses in origin tracking, lack of transparency in documentation, and limitations in traceability expose companies to investigations, lawsuits, or even market exclusion. These are not just legal challenges but strategic management and technological issues that must be addressed immediately.

SO, WHAT MUST VIETNAMESE BUSINESSES DO TO SURVIVE AND RISE AMIDST THESE CHALLENGES?
To avoid passively reacting to global trade policy storms, Vietnamese businesses can no longer rely on traditional practices. Survival - and growth - depends on their ability to transform swiftly, accurately, and strategically.

First, strict control over the origin of goods must be a top priority. In a world where origin is a key legal factor, only businesses that can fully trace raw materials and the entire production-distribution journey can be “immune” to sudden tariff shocks. This isn’t just a technical requirement - it’s a defensive and negotiating asset in international trade.

Next, investing in technology to enhance quality, reduce costs, and standardize processes is essential. As markets tighten, operational precision, speed, and efficiency will determine a business’s ability to endure and outcompete.

In parallel, cost optimization is no longer about trimming expenses here and there - it’s a strategic overhaul: restructuring the value chain, eliminating waste, maximizing machinery performance, and dynamically adjusting to real-time market changes.

Lastly, businesses must proactively diversify their markets - not just to reduce dependence on a single partner, but to enhance negotiation power and fully leverage the benefits of Vietnam’s signed Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).

ERP & AI: BOOSTING BUSINESS RESILIENCE IN THE FACE OF GLOBAL TRADE AND TARIFF VOLATILITY
To implement these strategies, businesses can’t rely solely on gut feelings and experience. They need powerful and agile technological platforms—most notably, the synergy of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and AI (Artificial Intelligence). These technologies help reduce costs and boost productivity through:

💠 Production Management: ERP combined with AI automates the entire production process - from planning and scheduling optimization to quality control. Sensor data is analyzed to predict equipment failures, enable predictive maintenance, and enhance operational performance.

💠 Supply Chain Management: ERP consolidates information across departments to monitor the entire supply chain - from warehouse intake to production and delivery. The system automates certificate of origin creation, integrates supplier data, and streamlines order management.

💠 Warehouse Management: Enables real-time inventory tracking. When inventory levels drop, the system automatically generates purchase orders. AI analyzes inventory data to forecast demand, reduce overstock or shortages, and optimize storage costs.

💠 Automated Processing of Invoices and Documents: ERP leverages OCR and NLP to read and input data from invoices and documents, while RPA and Machine Learning reconcile invoices, detect errors, and issue early warnings. Internal chatbots using NLP and ML assist staff in quickly retrieving information.
